East Atlanta Village
Rock shows at The EARL and 529, bungalow streets a block off the strip, and Battle of Atlanta ground all around.
My take
East Atlanta is for people who want to walk to a show. The Village, at Glenwood and Flat Shoals, is one of the few walkable bar and live-music strips left in intown Atlanta, with The EARL and 529 booking punk, indie and metal most nights, and the streetcar-era streets start a block away. The restaurant side took real hits after COVID and is rebuilding, with new places opening through 2026. You get a City of Atlanta address in DeKalb County, and an IB school path from elementary through high school.
On foot
The Village is a few compact blocks, so dinner, drinks and shows are an easy walk from much of the neighborhood. The BeltLine’s new Southeast Trail crosses Glenwood Avenue about three-quarters of a mile west, just past Moreland. MARTA Routes 21 and 22 stop at Glenwood and Flat Shoals and run into downtown.
- The VillageGlenwood and Flat Shoals: The EARL, 529, Banshee, Mary’s, and the flatiron-shaped building the East Atlanta Banking Company moved into in 1911.
- Brownwood ParkTwelve acres with a rec center, home of the East Atlanta Kids Club, and tennis courts redone in 2023 with help from Coco Gauff and Storm Reid.
- The Battle of Atlanta walkUnion General James McPherson was killed at what’s now McPherson and Monument Avenues on July 22, 1864, and a cannon monument and state marker stand there. Farther east, at Glenwood and Wilkinson, is the monument to Confederate General W.H.T. Walker.

What I’d walk to
- Music
- The EARL and 529 on Flat Shoals. The EARL books shows nearly every night, 529 most of the week.
- Dinner
- Banshee, Sagra (an Italian wine bar that opened in August 2026), and The EARL’s kitchen.
- Drinks
- Mary’s, the neighborhood gay bar, with karaoke and drag nights.
- Every year
- The East Atlanta Strut in late September: a parade, Porchfest, a 5K, Llama Poop Bingo and a leaf blower tournament.
What it’s like
- Housing stock
- Early-1900s streetcar-era houses and bungalows near the Village, and 1940s to ’60s cottages and ranches through the middle of the neighborhood.
- Prices
- Redfin’s 90-day median sale price ran about $485K to $590K over the year to May 2026, and Zillow put the typical home at about $500K in September 2026. Ask me for current sales on your street.
- Commute
- About 3.5 miles to Downtown, 5 to Midtown and 13 to the airport, with I-20 at Moreland. Inman Park/Reynoldstown and Edgewood/Candler Park stations are each about 2 miles by road.
- Schools
- Most addresses are zoned Burgess-Peterson Academy, King Middle and Maynard Jackson High, an IB path all the way through. A strip along Moreland is zoned Parkside Elementary. APS votes December 7, 2026 on new zones tied to school closures; Burgess-Peterson isn’t on the list but Parkside is, so check your address with me.
Worth knowing
- A 1902 monument said Confederate General W.H.T. Walker was “killed on this spot.” He wasn’t. A new monument went up in 1937 about two-tenths of a mile away, and the original spot is thought to be where Burgess-Peterson Academy stands.
- The founders of the Metropolitan Streetcar Company, Asa Candler and Joel Hurt among them, laid out the McPherson Park subdivision here to give people a reason to ride their line.
- Flat Shoals Avenue follows the old Sandtown Trail, a Native American trade path. The name comes from the flat shoals on the South River.
What to watch for
Noise is the trade-off near the Village: shows run late, some bars stay open until 2 a.m. on weekends, and I-20 runs along the north edge. Intrenchment Creek starts just south of the Village and Sugar Creek runs along the east side, so I check the FEMA flood map for any lot near a creek. And judge safety block by block, not by ZIP code: walk the street at night, talk to neighbors, and look at the police data for that street.
