Ormewood Park

My take

Ormewood Park sits between Grant Park and East Atlanta, with the BeltLine on the Grant Park side, Moreland Avenue on the east and United Avenue on the south. In the middle is Red’s Farm, the 5.3-acre farm Brian “Farmer Red” Harrison worked for about 30 years, which the city bought in 2024 as the neighborhood’s first large park. The BeltLine’s Southeast Trail opened along the edge in April 2026. SAND, the neighborhood group that started here in 1973, is still where you hear what’s coming next.

On foot

Quiet side streets, with Red’s Farm in the middle and shops at the edges: Glenwood Park in the northwest corner, and the shops at Moreland and Ormewood Avenue. The BeltLine has ramps at United Avenue and Delmar Avenue.

1. Red’s FarmRed’s Farm Preserve on Naomi Street: community garden plots, beehives, and Red’s Fall Fest, this year on Sunday, November 15.
2. The BeltLineGet on at Delmar and head north past Glenwood Park. From Glenwood Avenue it’s 1.3 miles to Krog Street Tunnel. Or head southwest past Boulevard toward The Beacon and the Sunday farmers market.
3. The Ormewood Avenue bridgeThe trail crosses Ormewood Avenue on an arched concrete rail bridge built in 1898 and 1899.
4. Burns CottageAt the end of Alloway Place, off United Avenue: the Burns Club of Atlanta’s 1911 replica of Robert Burns’ birthplace in Scotland, on the National Register. It’s a private club, so admire it from the street.

Dinner & drinks

Gunshow, Kevin Gillespie’s restaurant in Glenwood Park (Wednesday to Saturday, book ahead), plus Vickery’s, Vesper and Emmy Squared nearby.

Coffee & ice cream

Drip Coffee in Glenwood Park, and Morelli’s at Moreland and Ormewood Avenue, scooping there since 2008.

Weekends

The Grant Park Farmers Market at The Beacon, Sundays 9 to 1 year-round, about a mile southwest along the BeltLine.

Every year

Red’s Fall Fest at Red’s Farm in November, and SAND’s Ormewood Park Makers Festival (postponed this year).

What it’s like

Housing stock

Victorian and Craftsman houses, post-World War II wood cottages, late-1950s and early-’60s brick ranches, and newer infill and townhomes, especially in Glenwood Park. A few catalog and prefab homes from the 1920s building boom still stand.

Sales range widely between original houses and new builds. Ask me for current sales on your street.

Commute

About 3.5 miles to Downtown, 5 to Midtown and 12 to the airport. I-20 at Boulevard or Moreland. MARTA buses run on Moreland (4), Glenwood Avenue (21 and 22) and United Avenue (7).

Schools

Parkside Elementary, King Middle and Maynard Jackson High. Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School has its middle campus on Essie Avenue. APS is redrawing several elementary zones, Parkside’s included; its October preferred map keeps Ormewood Park at Parkside. The board votes December 7, 2026, so check your address with me.

Worth knowing

• An 1891 streetcar line ran up Underwood Avenue and along Delaware to Moreland. It’s why the trolley is the neighborhood’s symbol, and you’ll see it on mailboxes.
• United Avenue was Confederate Avenue until 2018, and Trestletree Court was Confederate Court.
• The city’s map puts Glenwood Park, built in 2003, inside Ormewood Park, but most people treat it as its own neighborhood.

What to watch for

Trestletree Village, 188 Section 8 apartments on about 21 acres beside the trail (half in Grant Park, half in Ormewood Park), is set to be rebuilt after Invest Atlanta approved $29 million in bonds and a $2 million grant in September 2026. The Grant Park association and SAND opposed the funding, mainly over moving all 188 households into one building on the Ormewood Park side. Demolition and construction are scheduled for January 2028. North of Glenwood Avenue, the BeltLine plans to rebuild the trail along Bill Kennedy Way with a new bridge over I-20. I also check the I-20 and Moreland edges for noise, and the flood map for the lot.
